38-Year-Old Man Treated Simultaneously For Chronic Heart And Lung Condition At Fortis Cunningham Road, Giving Him A New Lease Of Life

~ The man had developed a severe side effect from an injection that led to bleeding in the lungs ~

Bellary, 19 March 2025Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road successfully revived a 38-year-old man, who was suffering from severe respiratory issue and blocked artery of the heart. With almost no hopes of survival, a team of doctors led by Dr Nasiruddin G, Consultant-Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road adopted a multi-disciplinary approach, enabling him to walk out of the hospital in a fully recovered condition in just 10 days.

Patient Chaitanya (name changed) was undergoing treatment at a local hospital in Bellary following a heart attack, where he was given thrombolytic injections to dissolve the clot. Unfortunately, he developed a severe side effect where bleeding takes place into the lungs' air space (Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage). He visited multiple hospitals in his hometown (Bellary), but he was turned down because of his critical condition. Upon arrival at Fortis Cunnigham Road, he was in severe respiratory distress. His lungs were in whiteout condition (completely opaque in the X-ray) and had multiple bleeding sites, including coughing out blood, nasal bleeding, and rectal bleeding. This led to low hemoglobin levels, making his survival highly uncertain. Considering the criticality of the situation, the team of doctors decided to fight for his survival despite minimal hope. They ruled out other causes of DAH and confirmed that thrombolytic injections caused the bleeding. The medical team avoided invasive ventilation because of the poor condition of his lungs and opted for non-invasive oxygen support, antibiotics and multiple blood transfusions. He gradually became stable and was soon discharged in a stable condition.

Giving details of the case, Dr Nasiruddin G, Consultant-Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road said, “Balancing Chaitanya’s treatment was extremely challenging, as we had to manage both his compromised lung function and heart failure symptoms simultaneously. Despite the critical nature of his condition, his lungs began stabilizing within a few days, allowing us to proceed with a necessary angiogram, which revealed a major blood vessel blockage. With timely stent placement and comprehensive care, his recovery was nothing short of remarkable. Seeing a patient who once had zero chances of survival walk out of the hospital without oxygen support is a testament to the power of expert medical intervention and resilience of the human body.”

Mr. Chandrasekar R, Facility director, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, added, “This case stands out as an incredible medical success story, where a critically ill patient with no hopes of survival was brought back to life through expert, multidisciplinary care at Fortis Hospital. We are proud of our team’s expertise in handling such complex surgeries and achieving successful outcomes. We continue to push the limits of medical care to provide hope and the best possible results for our patients.”
