Hubballi, 05 March 2025: Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, has successfully treated a complex case of advanced tongue cancer in a 42-Year-Old Male with the help of cutting-edge surgical intervention to restore essential functions such as speech and swallowing. The medical team led Dr. Sandeep Nayak P, Director - Department of Surgical Oncology and Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore performed a complex procedure that involved the surgical removal of a major portion of the tongue along with the affected lymph nodes in the neck.
42-year-old Patient Ramanujan (name changed) from Hubballi had been experiencing an ulcer in his tongue for over three to four months but did not seek medical attention until he began facing difficulty in speaking and swallowing. The patient visited multiple hospitals in Hubballi before visiting Fortis Hospital Bangalore. By the time he approached Fortis, his condition had already progressed to a large ulcer growth on the right side of the tongue and enlarged neck nodes, indicating the spread of cancer.
Without any further delay, the medical team opted for microvascular reconstruction, a highly specialized technique wherein tissue from the patient's hand, along with blood vessels, was harvested and grafted onto the affected area. By meticulously reconnecting the blood supply, the team successfully reconstructed the tongue, facilitating the patient’s ability to speak, chew and swallow over time.
Talking about the condition, Dr. Sandeep Nayak P, Director - Department of Surgical Oncology and Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, said, “Tongue cancer is one of the most aggressive and challenging forms of oral cancer, often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to a lack of early symptoms or delayed medical attention. It is particularly prevalent among individuals with a history of tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and other risk factors such as sharp teeth and poor oral hygiene. Early detection and timely intervention are key to improving outcomes. Surgical treatment, particularly microvascular reconstruction, has revolutionized patient recovery. In this patient’s case, this treatment not only enhances post-surgical recovery but also significantly improved his overall quality of life. Following the successful surgery, the patient was advised radiation to prevent further recurrence. To ensure the best possible prognosis, a multidisciplinary approach including surgery, radiation, and rehabilitation plays a crucial role.”
The patient showed significant improvement and was discharged just eight days after admission with comprehensive post-care guidance, including medication management and light breathing exercises to aid recovery.
Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, said, “Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, remains at the forefront of oncological advancements, offering state-of-the-art treatment options and a patient-centric approach. This successful case highlights the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class cancer care, integrating innovative surgical techniques, and improving patient quality of life,”
While tongue cancer has a higher likelihood of recurrence, particularly in cases diagnosed at an advanced stage, early intervention and comprehensive treatment significantly improve patient outcomes. One of the key challenges with tongue cancer is its tendency to remain asymptomatic in the early stages, making early diagnosis difficult. Patients often do not experience noticeable discomfort or visible changes, leading to delays in seeking medical attention.
