Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur Successfully Treats 14-Year-Old Girl Suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) – A Rare Neurological Disorder

Jaipur, March 20, 2025: Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully treating a 14-year-old girl diagnosed with  Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare and  potentially life-threatening neurological disorder that causes sudden muscle weakness and can lead to paralysis. The patient had developed these symptoms during her brief stay in Chennai and often experienced difficulty in standing, walking, speaking, and breathing. She was initially treated at a local hospital in Chennai, where doctors advised prolonged ICU care as her condition was critical. Seeking the comfort of being closer to home, her family made the decision to return and admitted her to Fortis Escorts Hospital in Jaipur.

Patient Juhi (name changed), a resident of Rewari, arrived at the hospital in a wheelchair.  She was unable to stand or speak, and was experiencing severe respiratory distress. Upon admission, a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, pediatricians, and critical care specialists conducted a detailed medical evaluation. MRI scans of the brain and spine, along with lumbar puncture (a medical procedure where a needle is inserted into the lower back to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid) and specific antibody tests confirmed a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Given the severity of her condition, she was immediately placed on ventilatory support in the ICU.

The medical team led by Dr. Sahrad Sharma, Additional Director Pediatric Neurologist, Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur initiated an aggressive treatment plan, including high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, a proven medication known to halt the progression of GBS. Additionally, a structured rehabilitation program involving physiotherapy was implemented to help her regain muscle strength.

Over the course of 40 days, the patient showed remarkable progress. Her muscle power gradually improved, and she regained her ability to stand, walk, and speak. Ultimately, she made a full recovery by the time of discharge.

Dr. Sahrad Sharma, Additional Director Pediatric Neurologist, Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in such cases, He said “Pharyngeal-Cervical-Brachial variant Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare and rapidly progressive condition due to inflammation of the nerves that requires timely treatment. The estimated annual prevalence in India is 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 people, and it is a leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis in children. The first symptoms will be viral but within the next 5-6 days if the patient is not able to stand up and doesn’t have the strength to get up along with loss of speech might be a sign of GBS.  With rapid diagnosis and the right medical approach, full recovery is possible. This case highlights the critical role of IVIG therapy and rehabilitation in managing GBS.”

Dr. Manish Agarwal, Facility Director of Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur, lauded the efforts of the medical team, stating, “At Fortis Escorts Hospital, we are committed to providing world-class treatment through medical expertise and innovation. This case was particularly challenging due to the patient’s critical condition upon arrival. I commend our neurologists, pediatricians, and rehabilitation specialists for their coordinated efforts in restoring the young girl’s health. Seeing her leave the hospital on her own feet is a truly gratifying achievement.”
