Fortis Hospital, Anandapur Launches Super-specialty Lung Failure Clinic for Advanced Respiratory Care

Kolkata, April 2025: Fortis Hospital, Anandapur has launched the dedicated Lung Failure Clinic, a first-of-its-kind super-specialty outpatient service tailored to patients battling chronic and progressive respiratory conditions. The clinic will operate twice a month from the hospital’s ground floor premises and is aimed at improving the quality of life for patients living with long-standing respiratory illnesses such as COPD, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, and chronic asthma

The Lung Failure Clinic will provide individualized and holistic care beyond conventional pharmacotherapy. The multidisciplinary clinic will offer support physiotherapy-based rehabilitation, diet counseling, and lifestyle management, thereby addressing every aspect of the patient’s condition. Patients consulting the clinic will also undergo structured evaluation to determine eligibility for advanced care interventions, including lung transplant

Sharing her thoughts on the initiative, Dr. Sivaresmi Unnithan, Consultant – Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, said, “Many of our patients are not just battling a disease—they’re battling the countdown to an end-stage condition. The Lung Failure Clinic is our commitment to help such patients not merely survive but live meaningfully, with dignity and better quality of life. From oxygen-dependent individuals in their 70s to those in their productive 30s facing irreversible lung conditions, this clinic is for all of them.”

Sharing her thoughts on the initiative, Dr. Sushmita Roychowdhury, Director – Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, said, “Lung failure occurs in advanced stages of various lung diseases and often requires multidisciplinary assessment and advanced management strategies such as long term oxygen therapy, home ventilation, nutrition, pulmonary rehab and managing comorbidities effectively.  We aim to achieve holistic care for these patients via this clinic and also identify and optimize those patients who may be potential lung transplant recipients in future.”

Sharing her thoughts on the initiative, Ms Richa S Debgupta, Chief of Strategy and Operations, Fortis Healthcare said, “In India, we’re seeing a sharp rise in cases of chronic respiratory failure, often diagnosed late when patients are already oxygen-dependent or severely impacted in their day-to-day life. With the Lung Failure Clinic, we’re building a structured, empathetic approach to not just manage but proactively address the health needs of such patients. From early screening to transplant preparedness, this initiative would help in catering to such needs of our people from Eastern India.”

As part of its patient-friendly design, the clinic will provide customized packages that consolidate necessary investigations into a single-day process, supported by a dedicated coordinator who will assist patients throughout. This structure is particularly helpful for those with limited mobility or on oxygen therapy. The approach will also help pre-identify patients who may be suitable candidates for lung transplant, making it a critical funnel for advanced pulmonary care.

Notably, 20–30% of the hospital’s respiratory patients are currently present with end-stage lung disease, and while most are over 50, a concerning number of younger adults also require intensive support—making the launch of the Lung Failure Clinic a crucial step in enabling earlier diagnosis and preventing progression to critical stages.
