North India’s First CBCT-Guided Cryo-Lung Biopsy Performed by Fortis Noida to Detect Lung Cancer in a 70-Year-Old Elderly Male

Noida, 9th October 2025: Fortis Noida has marked a medical first for North India by successfully performing a Cone Beam CT (CBCT) guided cryo-biopsy of the lung. This cutting-edge procedure enabled doctors to diagnose lung cancer in a 70-year-old patient whose condition had remained undetected despite multiple tests conducted at several other city-based hospitals.

The patient, a chronic smoker, presented to Fortis Noida with worsening breathlessness and rapid weight loss. Previous investigations at other hospitals had been inconclusive, indicating only infection or non-specific findings. A PET-CT scan at Fortis Noida identified a suspicious lesion in the lung. However, standard biopsy methods were ruled out due to the high risk of lung puncture and and the likelihood of obtaining inadequate or non-diagnostic samples.

This case presented multiple diagnostic challenges - earlier tests, including bronchoscopy and fluid
analysis, had failed to identify the underlying cause. Even CT-guided biopsy and radial EBUS were
considered unsuitable because much of the lung mass appeared necrotic (dead tissue), making it
difficult to isolate viable tumour areas.

To overcome these challenges, the Fortis Noida Pulmonology team, led by Dr. Rahul Sharma, Additional Director, Pulmonology, opted for the CBCT-guided cryo-lung biopsy, a next-generation, minimally invasive technique that combines real-time 3D imaging, enhanced scope navigation, and augmented fluoroscopy for superior precision. This approach enabled the team to safely extract intact tissue samples from the live portion of the lung mass while avoiding damaged or necrotic regions.

The biopsy confirmed the presence of Non-Small Cell Carcinoma - a form of lung cancer and additional
lymph node sampling revealed early cancer spread. This accurate diagnosis and staging allowed.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Dr Rahul Sharma, Additional Director - Pulmonology, Fortis Noida said, “This breakthrough shows how advanced technology and clinical expertise can come together to solve complex cases. The CBCT guided cryo- lung biopsy allowed us to get a clear diagnosis and stage the cancer accurately, so the patient can begin the right treatment on time.”

Mr. Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Noida, added, “At Fortis Noida, our constant endeavour is to
bring the most advanced medical innovations to our patients. The successful adoption of CBCT-guided
cryo-lung biopsy reflects our commitment to offering world-class technology, precision-driven care,
and better clinical outcomes.”

This milestone highlights Fortis Noida’s leadership in adopting cutting-edge diagnostic technologies.
CBCT-guided cryo-lung biopsy is available at only a few specialized centres worldwide, and its successful use here marks a significant step forward in lung cancer care in North India.
