In a Rare Act of Love, Husband donates kidney to Wife on Karwa Chauth at Fortis Noida
Noida, October 11, 2025: In a heartwarming and rare act of love and courage, a husband turned this Karwa Chauth into a celebration of life by donating his kidney to his ailing wife. 50-year-old Pawan Rawat gifted his 47-year-old wife, Manisha Rawat, a new lease of life through kidney donation at Fortis Hospital, Noida, transforming the festival of fasting and prayers into one of devotion and hope.
Mrs. Rawat was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in 2021 — a long-term condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste from the blood. Despite continuous treatment, her condition worsened, and by April this year, her kidneys began to fail, requiring regular dialysis. Hoping for improvement, she turned to alternative therapy for two months, but her health deteriorated further.
In July, she was admitted to Fortis Hospital, Noida in a critical condition with severe fluid overload, weak heart function, and extreme fatigue. During treatment, she suffered two cardiac arrests but was successfully revived by the Fortis medical team.
Once stabilized, the doctors advised that a kidney transplant was the only viable option for longterm survival. Her 68-year-old mother initially volunteered to donate but was deemed medically unfit due to age-related health concerns. When other relatives declined, Mr. Rawat stepped forward without hesitation. “It’s my duty to save her life,” he said. “This time, I will do it by giving her a part of me.”
The transplant surgery took place on October 10, led by a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, urologists, and anesthesiologists. Though the procedure lasted nearly three hours and was technically routine, it was considered high-risk due to Mrs. Rawat’s fragile condition and weak cardiac function.
Dr Anuja Porwal, Director – Nephrology & Renal Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “ When Mrs. Rawat came to us, she was in a critical state. Dialysis was no longer helping her, and she had already survived two cardiac arrests. The transplant was her only chance at life. What makes this case remarkable is the husband’s decision to donate — a gesture that’s rare in India, where most kidney donors are women.”
Dr Piyush Varshney, Director – Urology & Renal Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida added, “ Given Mrs. Rawat’s fragile condition, this was a high-risk surgery. But seeing her husband’s courage and love inspired the entire team. This case is a reminder that medicine is not just about skill — it’s also about compassion, timing, and the extraordinary human spirit.” Following the surgery, both the donor and the recipient have been recovering well. Doctors say Mrs. Rawat is responding positively to the treatment and is expected to lead a near-normal life after recovery.
Post-surgery, both donor and recipient are recovering well. Doctors report that Mrs. Rawat is responding positively to treatment and is expected to lead a near-normal life after recovery.
On a day when countless wives fasted for their husbands’ long lives, Fortis Noida witnessed a husband who gave his wife the ultimate gift — the gift of life. The case stands as a powerful reminder of the life-saving impact of organ donation, the importance of timely medical intervention, and the compassion that defines modern medicine.
