63-Year-Old Woman Bedridden for a Month, Regains Mobility Post Complex Hip Revision Surgery
Faridabad, 8th May 2025: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad successfully treated a 63-year-old woman who was bedridden for past one month, owing to a failed total hip replacement surgery in her left hip. The team of doctors led by Dr Ashutosh Shrivastav, Additional Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad treated the elderly woman by performing a revised second total hip replacement surgery with proximal femur mega prosthesis (a large, customized prosthetic implant used to replace the upper portion of the femur (thigh bone) in case of significant bone loss or damage). The procedure went on for an hour and the woman started walking again the very next day.
The woman had suffered a fall in 2008 and had undergone a left hip bipolar prosthesis surgery (a partial hip replacement where only the ball of the hip joint was replaced) at another city-based hospital in Faridabad. In 2018, she suffered another fall while using the stairs, which caused the earlier implant to fail. As a result, she had to undergo a total hip replacement, where both the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) of the hip joints were replaced with artificial components made of metal and medical-grade plastic. Post this surgery she was unable to walk with restricted mobility at home as she was mostly on bed. She struggled with this condition for almost a month until she consulted Dr Ashutosh Shrivastav, Additional Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.
Upon admission at Fortis Escorts Faridabad, radiological scans were conducted, which revealed that the upper portion of the thigh bone (femur) - the part that normally holds and supports the hip implant - had deteriorated significantly indicating failure of previous done THR. Because of this severe bone loss, there was not enough structure left to anchor a regular hip implant, making a standard hip replacement impossible. Due to the complexity of the case, the team of doctors decided to perform a revision total hip replacement - a corrective surgery done when a previous hip implant fails, using a long stem proximal femur mega prosthesis - a specially designed implant that replaces not just the hip joint but also a portion of the thigh bone. This type of implant is typically used when there is severe bone loss and no support for a standard implant. The hour-long surgery was completed successfully, and the patient began walking from the very next day.
Giving details of the case, Dr Ashutosh Shrivastav, Additional Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, "This was a highly challenging and complex case due to the absence of supportive bone and the patient’s complex surgical history. Any delay in surgical intervention would have left her permanently bedridden. With careful planning and the right surgical approach, we were able to restore her mobility and independence. Complex revision surgeries like these require both precision and experience to achieve the best outcomes. In this case, if the patient had not been treated on time, she would have been bedridden for her entire life.”
Yogendra Nath Awadhiya, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad said, "This was a very challenging case considering the age and complexity involved. However, the team of doctors led by Dr Ashutosh Srivastav the correct line of treatment and helped the patient walk again. Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad is well-equipped with experienced clinicians and advanced technologies for accuracy in diagnosis and treatment, leading to quality patient outcomes. The patient’s recovery is a testament to the strength of our clinical teams and their dedication to improving lives."
