Blood Donation - a Safe Process with Life-Saving Benefits Suggest Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar
Amritsar, June 2025: As June 14th is observed as World Blood Donor Day, Doctors at Fortis Hospital, Amritsar have highlighted the importance of blood donation as it is a selfless act that plays a critical role in saving lives. However, despite its life-saving impact, many individuals hesitate due to concerns regarding their health post blood donation.
Dr. Rajeev Mehra, Additional Director - Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital Amritsar said “when an individual donates approximately 350 - 450 ml of blood (roughly 7–10% of total blood volume), the body responds quickly to replenish it. Plasma, the liquid component of blood, is restored within 24 to 48 hours, while red blood cells are fully replaced within three to four weeks. This efficient recovery process ensures there is no long-term impact on the health of the donor.”
He further underlined that “Regular blood donation can offer great health benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health, stimulation of red blood cell production, and enhanced awareness of one’s physical well-being. Donors are screened before every session, ensuring safety for both the donor and the recipient.”
Dr. Varun Pushkarna, Additional Director - Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital Amritsar, said, “The body begins to recover almost immediately after blood donation. Plasma is replaced within a day or two, and red blood cells are restored in a few weeks. Healthy donors don’t experience any lasting side effects. In fact, regular donors often become more aware of their health and lifestyle choices. India experiences a consistent blood shortage, with an estimated annual shortfall of around 1 million units despite a high demand of 14.6 million units per year. Thus, I strongly encourage eligible individuals to donate blood regularly as it’s a safe practice and helps in saving lives.”
Post-Donation Tips for Blood Donors:
· Rest for 10 - 15 minutes after donating blood
