Gurugram, 8th May 2025: On the occasion of International Thalassemia Day (May 8) the Pediatric Hematology Oncology and BMT Department at   Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram organized ‘Rockstars of Thalassemia’, an event to celebrate the courage and resilience of children living with Thalassemia. The event brought together 30 young warriors who lit up the stage with their spirited performances - dancing, singing, reciting poetry, and even presenting stand-up comedy. Their energy, enthusiasm, and smiles turned the day into a powerful tribute to hope, strength, and the human spirit.

Speaking at the event, Dr Vikas Dua, Principal Director and Head,  Paediatric Haematology, Haemato Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram said, “Thalassemia is a silent crisis that continues to affect countless families, especially in underserved regions. Early screening and awareness can prevent a lifetime of suffering for so many children. May 8th marks International Thalassemia Day, a global initiative to raise awareness among the public and policymakers. It is a day to recognize the strength of those living with thalassemia, to honor their stories, and to advocate for stronger policies and support systems that ensure a healthier, hopeful future.”

Padmashri awardee Shri Anup Jalota said, “Childhood should be a time for kids to enjoy life, not a period spent fighting a challenging battle. By spreading awareness and training medical professionals, we can significantly improve the survival and quality of life for children with thalassemia. It was truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and spirit of the children bravely battling thalassemia. Their performances served as a powerful reminder that early diagnosis and timely, appropriate treatment can make a significant difference in managing the condition and enabling these young warriors to lead fuller, healthier lives”.
